Setting off
What I need to consider before setting off

- I have to be physically and mentally fit. For example, if I have a broken arm or a fever, I am not allowed to ride my bike on the road.
- I use a bike that is equipped according to regulations and is the right size for my height.
- I know the traffic regulations (signs, markings, priority regulations, etc.) and adapt my behaviour.
- I am only allowed to cycle on a public road once I can ride my bike confidently and safely.
- I am not allowed to cycle on main roads on my own until I am at least 6 years old.

How I can protect myself
Bike helmet
To safely protect the head against shocks in the event of an accident, I should always wear a suitable bike helmet.
- I wear a well-fitting bike helmet with the EN 1078 designation – not only for sporty cycling and biking, but also in road traffic. The helmet should fit well, without pressing and wobbling.
- The front edge should be two finger widths above the top of the nose.
- Fit the straps equally close on both sides. There should only be room for one finger between the chin and the strap.
- The helmet's age and condition are important. The helmet must be replaced if it has suffered a severe blow or in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- Preferably I wear a helmet with integrated red rear lights and with light-reflecting material. This is particularly important when it is dark or visibility is poor.

- The straps equally close on both sides.

Visibility
I can be seen much better by others in eye-catching clothes and reflective accessories, so here’s what I pay attention to:
Eye-catching clothes
- Bright coloured clothes
- Reflective items of clothing

Reflective accessories
- Stickers
- Iron-on motifs
- Badges
- Chest, forehead, arm and wrist straps
- Velcro® stickers
- Reflective stickers for soles of shoes

Bike course
You can practice riding your bike safely on a course. You can build the course easily yourself and mark it out with chalk in a safe place. Before you start: Is your helmet on and adjusted? Is the saddle height correct? Is the bike safe to use and ready to ride? Are the brakes working, are the reflectors and tyres okay?
Cycling slalom
I cycle through the slalom course without putting my feet down! I am ready to brake while cycling and always look ahead to the next slalom marker!

Cycling in circles
I cycle exactly on the circle lines, either all the way round or in a figure 8. I alternately extend my left or right arm!

Give way
I look left and right in time before the give way marking! If a vehicle is approaching: I stop and give way to it. If there is no vehicle approaching, I may carry on cycling carefully.

Cycling in lane
I cycle as straight as possible between the two lines – without crossing them! The width between them is about 80 cm. I don't put a foot on the ground and look straight ahead into the distance!

Stop road
I drive right up to the white line! I don't put a foot on the ground and look straight ahead into the distance! I give way to the other vehicles!
