My bike

What I should consider when buying a bike
Tips when buying a bike:
- Height adjustable saddle and handlebars
- Solid and easy to repair bike
- Gears, brakes and lights that are as simple as possible to use

Before my first ride:
- Adjust the bike to my height. The bike is correctly adjusted when I can put my feet on the ground while sitting on the saddle with my legs stretched out.

Bike parts
- Two good brakes
- Front light
- Rear light
- White reflectors
- Red reflectors
- Four pedal reflectors
- Tyres with sufficient pressure and good tread
Brakes
The bike must have two independent brakes: one brake for the front wheel and one for the rear wheel.

Front and rear light
You need the lights on your bike switched on from the beginning of dusk until dawn, in poor visibility conditions (rain, snow or fog) and in tunnels. The front light is "white" and the rear light is "red". These must be clearly visible from 100 metres at night in good weather. Permanently installed lights or also attachable battery or rechargeable battery-operated lights are allowed.
Tip: I always take the lights with me as a precaution. I never know how the weather will develop during the day (e.g. summer thunderstorms).

- Rain
- Snowfall
- Fog
- Night
- Dusk
White reflectors at the front / red reflectors at the back
Reflectors must be firmly attached and clearly visible.

Pedal reflectors
Yellow reflectors must be mounted on the pedals that are clearly visible from the front and back. That makes four pedal reflectors in total.

Tyres
The tyre must have a good tread.

The following items are also recommended:

- Spoke reflectors (they make my bike easy to see from the side too.)
- Rack
- Mudguards
- Bike kickstand
- Bike lock
- Bell
Care kit
I need to check and service my bike regularly for my safety:
- Make any repairs immediately
- Replace any light batteries early
- Clean and lubricate it regularly

Liability insurance
Private liability insurance pays for harm or damage that I unintentionally cause to other people or other people's property (e.g. vehicles, plants, animals, etc.). If I do not have liability insurance, I must pay the costs myself. The police recommend that you take out private liability insurance!
